Pigmentation

Pigmentation

There are many types of pigmentation:  Hyperpigmentation – Hypopigmentation – Melasma – Lentigines – Vitiligo – Brown Spots – Liver Spots – Age Spots – Freckles.   It all can be so confusing!

Problems with skin pigmentation can make you feel self-conscious about your skin, which can have a negative impact on your life.  Today’s technology offers numerous ways to combat skin pigmentation issues, helping you have confidence, feel younger, and achieve the complexion of your dreams!

What is skin pigmentation?

Human skin color ranges in variety from the darkest brown to the lightest hues. Melanin in the skin is the substance that provides color to the skin and protects it from the sun. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production causing either an increase in production (hyperpigmentation) or a decrease in production (hypopigmentation). The result is patchy, uneven skin color. Some people experience small areas of darkened skin appearing like freckles, where others have large patches of discoloration.

Common causes of skin pigmentation changes include sun exposure, pregnancy/hormones, Addison’s Disease, and Vitiligo.

All these pigment conditions can be tricky, challenging, and stubborn to treat.  The GentleMax Pro® Laser, Microneedling, and Sublative Skin Rejuvenation treatments are frequently recommended for hyperpigmentation. Light-based treatments through your dermatologist are used for hypopigmentation. Medical-grade topical products are often used in conjunction with these treatments to help with pigmentation resolution.

Finding an experienced clinician is extremely important to get the desired results because improperly administered treatments can make pigment conditions worse. If you are experiencing skin pigmentation issues, sun exposure can worsen symptoms. We, therefore, recommend the use of broad-spectrum physical sunscreen of at least 30 SPF.
