Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Did you know that many visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss? As facial tissues thin out, lines become etched around the nose, mouth, and cheeks making them look a little hollow. Dermal fillers can replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance. In fact, more than one million men and women annually choose this popular facial rejuvenation treatment, which can be a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime.

There are many different types of dermal fillers on the market today and choosing a filler can be confusing. There are natural, synthetic, semi-permanent, and temporary fillers to choose from. All dermal fillers differ in chemical makeup, longevity, and have varying degrees of softness. Softer fillers are used in the lips, for example, while sturdier fillers might be desired to enhance cheekbones.

At Elysium Skin & Laser we exclusively use Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers which include Juvederm® and Restylane® products. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in your body that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain hydration and softness, and adds volume. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like and infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment. The results are temporary, lasting 6-12 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles.

HA fillers have become the most popular dermal filler on the market today due to their safety profile, ease of use, and reversibility.

FDA approved HA fillers include:

What to Expect During Treatment

An initial pre-treatment consultation will be completed to evaluate your area of concern, review your medical history, and determine which filler is appropriate for you. While the risks associated with dermal fillers are minimal, it is pertinent that a full medical history is disclosed including allergies, skin and neurological conditions, and medications you use in order to ensure safety and achieve ultimate results.  It is recommended that NSAIDS (e.g. Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) be discontinued at least 7 days prior to treatment. Your provider will discuss with you all pre-treatment recommendations to ensure the best possible results following your treatment.

On the day of your treatment, the area will be cleaned, and a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area. HA fillers also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to minimize discomfort during and after treatment. Your provider will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin using either a fine needle or blunt micro-cannula to help fill wrinkles or add volume. Rest assured that the majority of patients only report feeling mildly uncomfortable during treatment.

Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after the filler is placed. Some patients experience mild bruising, swelling, pain, or tenderness; however, this is temporary and should subside within a few days following treatment. You will be able to go back to most of your normal activities right after treatment-limiting strenuous physical activity for 24 hours.

How Much Product Will I Need?

The amount of product needed will depend on the area being treated and the amount of volume loss and wrinkles present. When it comes to lip fillers, it is always best to gradually build lip plumpness rather than increase all at once as this provides a more natural look.

Results

Results are immediate; however, the best results are seen 1-2 weeks following treatment after any swelling or bruising has resolved. How long the effects of the dermal fillers will last depend on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer it will last. HA fillers typically last anywhere from 6-18 months. Injections to the lips will wear out a little faster than those to the nasolabial folds. Certain HA fillers, such as VOLUMA®, are formulated to last longer but are usually limited to certain areas, such as the cheeks.
